Green-fingered residents living at Alexander Hutchinson Court, a sheltered
housing scheme in Hull, have now got the garden they always wanted. With
an investment of almost £63,000 from the Green Spaces project, the original
design – a lawn with a planted border - has been completely transformed to
provide an outdoor space that residents can truly get involved with.
The scheme includes a series of raised planters with a wide selection of plant
species to encourage a greater variety of wildlife. New pathways have also
been created, giving easy access for everyone to enjoy the garden.
The focal point is an octagonal timber gazebo which provides a sheltered
seating area for people to meet and watch birds and other wildlife.
Residents are keen to help maintain the garden, with some already taking
ownership of the raised planters.
The project has also helped to create a stronger sense of community at the
scheme with its 50 residents working together to design the type of garden
that will enhance their quality of life.
