At Clayton Brook in Chorley an existing recreation area has been remodelled to create
a new playground.
The Green Spaces team has worked alongside Chorley Borough Council to develop plans
to provide a better public facility for the 633 homes in the area.
Almost £150,000 has been invested in the project which has included the redesigning of
pathways to provide better access to the area. This new space, which is situated at the
heart of the Clayton Brook community, has provided a valuable facility for the 1,425 residents
who live there – a quarter of which are aged under 20.
The project, which took two months to complete, involved close consultation with local
residents, particularly young people. The council held a series of events to gather views on
how the area could be improved. These ideas were drawn up by architects and a vote was held
during a Young Peoples' Evening where the final design was agreed.
There is now a youth shelter, basket swing and climbing wall as well as equipment specifically
for the sport of free-running, known as Parkour. This popular urban sport gives participants
the chance to combine elements of gymnastics with tricks and stunts.
